The First Night in a New Home: How to Make It Feel Like Yours

Moving boxes everywhere. Takeout on the living room floor. Excitement for a new chapter ahead. That familiar feeling of starting over again—where a space is fresh and new, ready to make your own.

The first night in a new home is filled with so many emotions—and usually, so little furniture. Night one isn’t for having it all figured out. Instead, it’s for enjoying the time where empty spaces let you see your new home clearly, where every corner is an endless possibility. It’s this short window of time when you can dream up the space you’ve always wanted to create, and now, finally, have the opportunity to do just that.

Here are our tips for moving into a new home and how to feel settled.

Find Comfort in the Chaos

Remember that your first night will be hectic, tiring, and probably a little uncomfortable. But there are a few things you can do to help find your calm and keep your routine in check. It’s not about having everything perfect—it’s about creating calm.

Pack a Suitcase of Essentials

Before you box everything up to move, be sure to set aside a suitcase of your daily essentials, including a few sets of clothes, toiletries, hand soap, toilet paper, and other must-haves. This helps you stay organized for a few days while you find new homes for everything else.

Order Comfort Food

Save yourself the hassle of searching for the pots-and-pans box. Get to know your new local spots by ordering a takeout dinner that brings you joy. Plus, eating it while sitting criss-cross on the floor will be one of your first memories in the new house—and one you’ll always look back on.

Start Planning on Pinterest

There’s no better time than an empty first night to start bringing your vision to life. Hone in on your aesthetic and plans for the space by pinning inspiring photos or saving pieces you love.

Phone a Friend

It’s always helpful to hear a familiar voice, especially in the echo of an empty apartment. Give your friends and family a call to calm any nerves about your next chapter.

Check on Your Deliveries

If you have already started ordering furniture and decor, keep an eye on your delivery tracking and scheduled shipments so you can be ready to unbox and start making your house a home!

Our tip when moving is to take measurements before your move-in date. That way, you can order furniture that has longer delivery times in hopes of it arriving as close to your move-in date as possible.

Focus on the Bedroom First

It can be enticing to have an ambitious first night, trying to get everything unpacked and under control. This often makes you feel more scattered and disorganized when you rush to get it done. There’s nothing wrong with taking your time; in fact, we encourage you to do so! If you really want to focus on making something feel “done,” let it be your bedroom. Because there’s no better feeling after move-in day than lying in your bed.

Order Your Bed Frame Ahead of Time

At SoftFrame®, each of our bed frames is handcrafted in the U.S.A. and ships in approximately 1-2 weeks. If you time it right, you won’t be sleeping on the air mattress for long.

A bed frame sets the tone for the entire bedroom, so finding the one you love is a perfect first step. Whether your style is light and airy, moody and cozy, or a little of both, we have just the bed frame selection.

Our 100% CertiPUR-US® certified foam-paneled bed frames are upholstered in premium, durable fabrics that match any style or aesthetic. They create a soft space for you to settle in.

Complement Your Frame with Accent Furniture

Dressers, nightstands, lamps, mirrors, and the list goes on. Don’t get overwhelmed—just take it piece by piece. After picking out your bed frame, consider which materials and furniture styles will pair best with its fabric and color.

Add Layers and Personality

A bedroom isn’t complete until you add your personal touches. That could be a photostrip of you with friends, your daily journal, a hand-knit blanket, or a piece of art. It doesn’t have to complete the room visually, but it should make it feel like you

Live In It

Homes aren’t created overnight. Curating a space that feels personal, unique, and finished means living in it for a while and seeing what you need over time. Making a house a home takes time, and it’s best to enjoy the process.

If you rush to furnish and style every room as quickly as possible, you might look back and wish you had done something differently or find that your pieces aren’t working cohesively. Good things take time—so make sure you take yours.

Night One, Done!

Moving into a new home can feel overwhelming, but when you take your time and focus on the small comforts and personal touches, you can have a calmer move-in.
